4. Why ID Theft Happens - Go Here If You Are A Victim. How some people become victims, while others do not.
Do you tear up unwanted mail and credit card solicitations; and do you throw away junk mail in the trash? Wrong Answer! Use a cross-cut shedder.
Do you use your Debit Card in sit-down eating facilities?
Do you carry more than two credit cards on your person?
Do you have your bank check orders sent to your unsecured home mailbox?
If you answered YES, to any one of these questions, you are a "ID Theft Victim" waiting to happen.
5. Solutions - NOTIFY THE POLICE: Contact your local police department to file a criminal report. Document the names and phone numbers of everyone you speak to regarding the incident. List exactly what has happened, such as bad checks, credit card abuse, or misuse of name, state driver license, or identification card. Follow up your phone calls with letters. Keep a copy of the police report.
Because of the explosion of "IDentity Theft", numerous state laws have been changed to help "Victims of Identity Theft". Texas enacted two laws effective September 1st, 2005.
The first new law requires law enforcement personnel to take a police report regardless of where the theft occurred. Cross-jurisdictional issues of a crime committed in Dallas but you live in Plano, allows you to file in Plano.
The second law requires all bars and restaurants in the State of Texas to display signage for all employees stating, "It is a "FELONY" to skim a debit or credit card".
If your state does not have these laws, we strongly urge you to contact your state representatives and ask, "WHY NOT?"
